Cotton

Cotton plays a vital role in the economy of Pakistan and known as cash-crop. Out of 6 million+ farmers in Pakistan, 1.3 million cultivate Cotton on over 3 million hectares. Although its contribution in planted area is 15%, but on the contrary, it drives more than 60% of agricultural economy of Pakistan. Cotton production adds value over $2.5 billion to the national economy and supports Pakistan’s largest industrial sector, comprising textile mills, spindles, looms, knitwear units, garment units, dyeing & finishing units and ginneries. Pakistan is the 5th largest producer of Cotton in the world and among top 5 exporters of raw Cotton and Cotton yarn, and is a significant source of foreign exchange earnings. Cotton crop is mostly sown in Punjab and Sindh in Kharif (May/ Jun) and it takes 4.5 month to get produce. Farmers are facing difficulties in crop management and are not getting good production and quality of yield. Their cost of crop management increases due to significant pest attacks such as Whitefly, Jassid, Thrips & other chewing insects. Bayer is providing solution for the better management of the crop.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane is an important ‘Cash Crop’ of Pakistan. It is an important source of income and employment for farming community and the country. It has a great share in agriculture and GDP, 3.4% and 0.7% respectively. Pakistan is ranked 6th on largest Sugarcane producing countries. It also forms essential item for industries like sugar, chip board, paper, barrages, and confectionery. Sugar cane production has increased overtime. Despite expansion in production, the increase in the productivity per unit of area has been very low. The average produced in Pakistan is very low as compared to the cane production by other countries. The average yield of Sugarcane in the world is around 60 metric tons per hectares. Sugarcane production in Punjab, Sindh and N.W.F.P are 62 %, 26 % and16 % respectively of the total area. The planting season in subtropical regions is preferably spring but areas where winter is severe planting may only be available in autumn. Growers should be aware of the practices they can use to decrease the possibility of soil insects damage. There are usually enough grubs or wireworms already present in this type of land due to which a preventive application of insecticide at cane planting time becomes essential. Ongoing wireworm and white grub infestations will persist in grassy fields. Bayer offers a wide range of quality product for effective dissemination of insect pest and disease management.

Gram

Gram is a major Rabi pulse crop in Pakistan. It is grown in areas after rain and floods. It is a short duration crop and can be grown between September and November. The best time for sowing is the second week of October. Being a leguminous crop, it is well suited under dry tracks. It requires winter climate weather condition and is allergic to frost. In normal condition the gram matures within four months or a little later. After reaching maturity stage the gram plant cannot stand heavy rains or hail storm. The crop demand rainy condition but it can be grown in less irrigated areas also. The crop is heat resistant and flourishes under good moisture condition. It can bear drought condition due to long taproot which allows using water from great depths than other pulse. It tolerates acidity but is sensitive to salinity and alkalinity. It has the ability to stick to 60-80 percent of its nitrogen requirement and excessive nitrogen fertilizer may delay maturity.
