Rice
Rice is an important and profitable crop of Pakistan. It has a value of 3.1% in the agricultural sector and 0.6% in the GDP. It is also an important crop of the world especially Middle-East, Latin America and West Indies. The demand of Rice, remain throughout the year. Wheat
Wheat is the largest grown grain crop and main staple food in Pakistan. It contributes 13.1% to the agriculture and arround 2.8% to GDP. Wheat sowing area in Pakistan is more than 9 million acres. Annual consumption is around 23 million tons. Pakistan stands 7th among the largest Wheat producing countries of the world. In Pakistan, Wheat is generally sown over a period of 6-8 weeks extending from October to late December. For land preparation deep ploughing should be used by sub-soiler or mold-board, if sub soil is hard 2-3 ploughings are recommended where chronic weeds are present. The cause for low yield could be poor quality seeds or unbalanced use of fertilizers. Maize
Maize is the highest yielding cereal crop in the world. It is third important cereal crop after Wheat and Rice. Maize accounts for 4.8% of the total cropped area and 3.5% of the value of agricultural output. It is grown all over the country but major areas are Sahiwal, Okara and Faisalabad districts. Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with total production surpassing that of Wheat or Rice. Maize crop is mainly grown in two seasons i.e. spring and autumn. Spring Maize can be planted in the first week of February to first week of March or from mid-December to mid-March and autumn Maize can be sowed from mid-May to August. Shoot fly is the main pest in spring maize and Stem borers in autumn crop. Hopper and aphids are also able to cause damage in both the crops if not managed properly. Trianthima portulacastrum (itsit), Cyprus rorundus (deela), Chienopidium (Bathu) and echinocola colona (Swanki) are weeds responsible for significance yield loss.
